Gunlock Design

Omega gunlocks are defined as internal chamber technology. The locks fit inside the gun chamber, being the same size as empty brass, as opposed to existing gunlocks that are applied as a bulky accessory, usually in the form of a cable or trigger lock. The Omega gunlock works with a key. There are two types of keys: a small, tamper-resistant L - key that locks from the breach, or the child-resistant, folding key that locks down the muzzle of the gun, for automatics and revolvers. The L - key is used on shotguns and rifles, while the child-resistant key is used on all automatic handguns, revolvers and derringers.

Design: This new technology works when the key engages with the lock and two molded cones come together, which then expands a soft aluminum ring and locks in the chamber. In the case of an automatic pistol, the lock engages the extractor, locks the slide onto the frame and renders the gun inoperable. In all shotguns and rifles, the locking system bypasses all extractors and ejectors. In revolvers, the lock goes through the cylinder, into the barrel, and locks the cylinder, trigger and hammer, freezing the entire gun. Because these locks are internal, they are also caliber specific, not gun specific, allowing them to be more secure and more effective than external gunlock designs.

Models: Omega gunlocks fall into four categories: automatic handguns, shotguns, revolvers, and rifles. As of November 2004, there are thirty-five models available. These 35 models include revolvers, which will not be available until first quarter 2007.

Omega gunlocks are tested, approved, and certified by the California Department of Justice, Firearms Division. No gunlock may be distributed for sale with a firearm in California without this approval. No other state in the nation has such stringent criteria, yet many states are in the process of adopting similar standards in addressing gun safety. As of April 2004, Omega is one of the internal locking systems approved in Maryland for sale with automatic handguns. Without an approved locking system, Maryland gun dealers cannot sell a handgun. Omega has also been approved for sale in the state of Massachutes.

Omega Safety Systems, Inc, is a member of the ASTM Firearm Safety Device Standards committee, and is active in developing high standards for the manufacturing of gunlocks. In July 2004, Omega was approved as an integral locking mechanism by the ASTM.

Omega Safety Systems, Inc. is a member of the NSSF, the National Association of Sports Shooting Federation, and the largest gun industry trade association in the United States.

Omega Safety Systems, Inc. holds a Federal Firearm License, which is required when transporting, selling, or buying firearms.

Browning, Winchester, Phoenix Arms, and H & R currently furnish an Omega gunlock with many models of firearms. Omega will soon announce additional distribution agreements with additional OEM gun manufacturers.

Omega Safety Systems, Inc. president, Larry Ross, is an NRA member and former NRA instructor. Larry received a National Leadership Award in 2002 and he also received a "Who’s Who" award for professionals in 2004.
